Racing Customs I know you've heard this one. "Don't wear your hat indoors!" This is a custom that comes from back in the days of the Civil War when it was expected for gentlemen to remove their hats when coming indoors as a way of showing honor and respect to the home owner. If a gentleman did not remove his hat or refused to remove his hat, it meant that he was there for reasons other than pleasantries and as a result was not openly welcomed into the home. There was no consequence for someone who didn't remove a hat from their heads indoors, therefore, it was a custom. Now in my Dad's house, you took your hat off at the door if you ever wanted to wear that hat or any hat again. See, this action had definite consequences thereby making it a rule which applied to everyone. I later learned to remove a hat going indoors as a natural reflex after spending 24 years in the US Air Force where it was policy that if you were not armed, you removed your hat! See the difference? I've been retired for four years and I still unconsciously take my hat off whenever I walk indoors. A custom is an unwritten rule! There are numerous customs in Auto Racing that you need to be aware of. In many racing series, a custom or gentlemen's agreement, not to pass another competitor when when the caution or yellow flag is displayed. In some series, it is
