Auto Racing Defined Defined: "Auto Racing of all types, puts driver and machine against other drivers and their machines, to see who is the fastest and/or most durable of the group. The first one to finish is the winner and being second only counts in points." No matter what type of racing you are into, winning is the key! There are many different forms of auto racing and each shares some basic elements- One has to be at the top of their game to win consistently and there is always a percentage of luck involved. For those who do not know, Auto Racing is a lot more than just going around in a circle or speeding down a straight line. Auto racing is a sport! Yes, despite what you may have heard, it really is. The drivers are athletes too! If you don't believe me, get into the car with your 15 year old daughter, to whom you are giving driving lessons, put on a helmet and your best insulated hunting suit, including your gloves. Now roll the windows up and turn the heater on full/hot. Ride back and forth through rush hour traffic on the interstate in any major city until you've reached 500 miles, without stopping! Once you experience the heat, the nerves, and the pressures of the situation, not to mention the screaming and yelling, you'll know what it takes to drive a race car, well sort of. Auto Racing is one of the earliest forms of competition where individuals pit themselves against others in a goal to be first. Oh yeah, there is tennis and golf, but are they considered a sport? Not to me! Anyway, racing in the early years started mostly for bragging rights and the occasional bet. It evolved from moon shiners of the deep South using automobiles to haul illegal alcohol and to outrun local law enforcement. See our section on History for more information about racing's origins. Auto Racing is the number one (#1) spectator sport in the world today! Different forms of racing produces very large numbers of fans who follow the sport like a religion. I once heard a local Preacher of a Baptist church tell one of his parishioners, he wished he could get the following for church like the following for NASCAR. If so, he would surely secure his place in heaven. The parishioner replied that it ain't going to happen! "Oh yes, all things are possible" the preacher said. The parishioner put his arm around the preachers neck and stated, "God made the Sabbath on Sunday, a day of rest, so he can stop what he is doing and watch the race with the rest of us". He went on to say, "It's true, have you ever heard of a race starting before church was over? See!" Auto Racing is a multi-billion dollar business here in the States. It is chocked full of advertising because race fans have proven to be the most brand loyal consumer group in any market. I've even seen advertising posted right above the men's restroom urinals. It said "U-Cakes, the most fragrant urinal cake in the world is the OFFICIAL Urinal Cake of NASCAR." The U-Cake manufacturers paid big money to be able to boast about being "The Official whatever of NASCAR" and to be able to post that ad over all the urinals at that racing facility.
