The Objective of Auto Racing The key objective in the art of Auto Racing is to win and to win as many events as you can during a season to become the Season Champion! There are many reasons why people race automobiles. The thrill and adrenaline that it produces is something that some people need to survive. Some like the limelight and some like the money! Some like it all! There are several factors that go into why we race cars and trucks. It's just like any other sport in that there are those who truly enjoy it and do it because others like to watch it. Drivers, Team Owners, and Race Teams get into auto racing for the thrill and for the money, which plays a bigger role in why most people race. Drivers who choose this line of work make lots of money for working to make their skills and team the best of the best. Most of today's drivers are already millionaires, but they continue to make more and more money and the better they are on the track, the bigger their bank account. Owners make a good sum of money as well. The guys who work on the cars and equipment also make plenty of money. Who is paying all this money? Is it the government? Yeah, you wish! Nope, it's sponsors. The people who are trying to sell you Coca Cola, Tide washing detergent, Budweiser Beer, Goody's Headache Powders, and just about everything else under the sun! Yep, they pay big money to have their product names associated with top drivers, owners, teams, and tracks. It is a known fact that Race Fans, as a marketing group, are the most brand loyal group, meaning that if they see a product or service advertised in their favorite racing series, they are more likely to buy it and buy it often. That single fact is why you see everyone trying to advertise in Auto Racing. It is estimated that last year in NASCAR, both in the Busch Series and the Nextel Cup Series, over 2.4 billion dollars changed hands due to advertising. That's almost more than the US Government spent on our troops last year! It is a sport that is truly supported by advertising, all the way down to the Official Track Hot Dog of NASCAR. Do you know how much money it takes to become The Official Product of NASCAR? The Official Fuel of NASCAR is Sunoco and it is said that they pay over 34 million dollars per year for that distinction. Are you stating to see how it all works? Yes, winning is the primary objective but there are many other reasons for racing. All you have to do is look at the decals on any typical race car and you'll see what I mean. The more races a team wins, the more those advertisers have to pay to keep their logos on the car. Here is an example; Gillette (Men's Shaving Products) sponsors several cars and drivers in NASCAR. They are referred to as "The Gillette Young Guns". They pay close to $100K to have their logo on the driver's suit and on the side of the racecar. They pay Jimmy Johnson close to $400K for the same privilege. In case you didn't know, Jimmy has won 2 Nextel Cup Championships in the past few years. He is advertising's "Hot Ride"! There are many sub-objectives to racing. The satisfaction of building a sports team and making it work is one of the biggest. Teaming up with car manufacturers to produce cars that are faster and better than their competition. Yes, there is a Manufacturers Race and yes there is a trophy for that too. Promoting a certain product, service, or organization is one of the objectives. Casey Mears drove a pink and white car last year to promote research, treatment, and to educate women on Breast Cancer and the preventative measures that they should take. Kyle Petty fielded a car for The Victory Junction Gang Camp, a place where terminally ill kids can go to a camp that fits and provides for their medical needs. So you see the list of objectives goes on and on. Talk to any driver and ask them, "Why do you race cars? You'll get many different answers and each answer is a racing objective.
